How deep should a koi pond be?
Koi ponds should be a minimum of 1.2m–1.5m deep to protect fish from temperature extremes and predators such as herons. Larger koi benefit from depths of 1.8m or more. We always design to the correct depth for your intended fish stock.
How much does a koi pond installation cost?
Koi pond costs start from around £5,000 for a compact, well-filtered feature pond and can range to £20,000+ for large, fully landscaped showpiece ponds. We provide detailed, itemised quotes after a free site visit.
What filtration do I need for a koi pond?
Koi produce significantly more waste than other fish, so filtration must be sized generously. We recommend a system capable of turning over the full pond volume every 1–2 hours, incorporating mechanical settlement, biological filtration and a UV clarifier.
How long before I can add koi to a new pond?
A new pond needs to complete its nitrogen cycle before stocking - typically 4–6 weeks. We advise on safe methods to accelerate cycling and confirm water parameters are safe before you introduce any fish.
Do koi ponds need a bottom drain?
For a properly functioning koi pond, a bottom drain is strongly recommended. It continuously draws settled waste from the deepest point directly into the filter, preventing organic build-up. Without a bottom drain, manual sludge removal becomes a much more frequent necessity. We install bottom drains as standard on all our koi pond builds.
How do I protect my koi from herons?
Herons are a serious threat across Essex, Kent, London and Hertfordshire. Effective deterrents include a pond net, motion-activated water sprinklers, and strategically placed decoy herons. Pond depth also helps - koi at 1.5m+ are significantly harder for herons to reach. We'll advise on the most practical solutions during your consultation.
How often does a koi pond need servicing?
Koi ponds need more frequent attention than standard garden ponds due to the high bio-load koi produce. We recommend monthly maintenance visits during the active season (spring through autumn), including water testing, filter servicing and fish health checks. Quarterly checks during winter are also advisable.
What size koi pond do I need?
As a minimum, we recommend a pond of at least 5,000 litres for a modest collection of koi. Each large adult koi requires roughly 1,000 litres of well-filtered water. Koi also grow - some reaching 60–90cm - so designing a pond for your fish's eventual adult size is always the right approach. We'll help you plan for the collection you want.
